Before Advantage, Before death saves, and even before THACO. We had Advanced Dungeons and Dragons.
The original Keep on the borderlands from 1979 opens with: Welcome to the land of imagination. You are about to begin a journey into worlds where magic and monsters are the order of the day, where law and chaos are forever at odds, where adventure and heroism are the meat and drink of aII who would seek their fortunes in uncommon pursuits. This is the realm of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS@ Adventure Game.”
This is not modern Dungeons & Dragons, and that’s part of the charm. The rules are simpler in some ways and harsher in others, but they create a style of play that is fast, exciting, and full of surprises. You won’t need to memorize everything ahead of time. We’ll learn together as we go, and you’ll quickly get the hang of how things work at the table.
Combat can be dangerous, but it is only one part of the adventure. Players who think creatively, ask questions, and interact with the world will find many paths forward. Talking your way out of trouble, setting clever plans, or avoiding a fight altogether can be just as rewarding as swinging a sword. The game rewards curiosity and bold ideas more than perfect character builds.
The Keep stands as a small point of light on the edge of a wild and unpredictable frontier. Beyond its walls lie the Caves of Chaos, a place filled with rival groups, hidden dangers, and opportunities for brave adventurers. How you approach it is entirely up to you. You might charge in, sneak through the shadows, or find a diplomatic solution. Every group that has ever journeyed beyond the Keep on the Borderlands has told a different story.
This style of play focuses on the choices you make at the table. Your character sheet gives you a starting point, but your creativity and teamwork will shape the adventure far more than any ability score. The dice will add tension and excitement, but your decisions will always matter most.
Characters may face real danger, and sometimes things won’t go as planned. That’s part of what makes the experience memorable. If a character falls, the story continues, and new heroes step forward to carry on the adventure. The goal is not just to win, but to experience the journey, share some laughs, and create stories you’ll be talking about long after the session ends.

It is said that beyond the veil of fog lie domains untouched by mercy, where the past festers and the land itself remembers every sin.
You have all felt it, in one way or another. A dream that lingered too long, a chill that refused to fade, a whisper just at the edge of hearing. Now the mists have come for you, curling at your feet and urging you forward into a place that does not wish to be known. Somewhere ahead, something waits, patient and watchful, as though it has been expecting you all along. And once you step beyond the threshold, the only certainty is this: not all who enter the mists are ever meant to leave... and this realm of horror that you will soon find yourself will be like none other
This one shot marks the beginning of a new chapter, the opening toll of a bell that will echo throughout the coming Season of Horror. What lies beyond this first step is a descent into darker tales, where courage will be tested and fear will take many forms. The World Tree, Yggdrasil, is a cosmic ash tree that spans the Outer Planes and links them to many worlds of the Material Plane. Its roots stretch into the Lower Planes, touching Hades, Pandemonium, and possibly other Lower Planes. Most of its massive trunk rises through the plane of Ysgard, and its branches stretch through the Upper Planes and across the Astral to the Material Plane.
Some legends describe a great tree, a seedling of Yggdrasil, that the god Corellon planted and tended on the First World at the dawn of time. When the First World was destroyed, seeds from this tree scattered into the void and took root to form the worlds of the Material Plane. Thus, many philosophers and naturalists view all trees or even all plants as descendants of Yggdrasil, part of a vast network of plant life across the multiverse.
And you now stand at the roots of the world tree as a terrifying force of Giants has hijacked Yggdrasil to tear the universe asunder, one root at a time.
